Yesterday I ran into an old girl friend from college. She is 26 and single. While chatting with her I casually inquired about her single status, she replied, “I am in no hurry to settle down.” This is not the first time I have heard this statement, I am sure even you would have heard your friends say the same thing many a times. Ten years ago single at 26 would have been a cause of concern and worry for girls but things are different now. So what is it really that is pushing girls in favor of late marriage.Freedom: How about coming back home at midnight without having to answer anybody? Or planning a trip to Goa with friends without anyone’s approval? Sounds pretty exhilarating to me. Marriage adds lot of responsibility towards ones partner. After marriage, your partner has a say in all your decisions, it is not possible for a girl to wake up one day and just pack the bags and leave. The freedom that comes with being single is definitely one reason that makes girls opt for late marriage.
Financial Independence: Career oriented girls are usually financially independent by the age of 24-25. They start paying their own bills and realize that they do not need a partner to support them for their needs. Girls are more than just capable of taking care of themselves. Three cheers to Girl Power!!!
Social Acceptance: Single women in their late twenties are no more considered a social taboo. Acceptance from family and society gives them the freedom to enjoy and celebrate their singlehood. The families have also stopped pressurizing girls for getting married at an early age. This comes as a big relief. Without the social pressure to get married and settle down girls feel at ease, instead of rushing into marriage with the first guy that comes into site, they decide to wait for the right guy to enter their life.
Not Ready For Family Life: This could be one of the biggest reasons for preferring late marriage. Marriage means starting a family and having kids sooner or later. Every girl dreams of becoming a mother one day, but what’s the rush. When a girl can go out and have a kick ass time why would she settle down for household chores or changing the diapers. With social acceptance for late marriage girls are in no hurry to settle down. It is not that girls don’t want to, but they want it to happen when they are ready.
Open Relationships: Relationships are not that simple now days. Open relationships comes without any commitments. Many girls prefer being in a relationship where they know that they can walk out when the going gets tough. This is one reason for late marriage that I am not really happy writing about. What happened to ‘love you forever’? Anyhow, open relationships comes with lot of ease and many girls are happy to chose one for the same reason.
